A Look At Regional Food: Alaska

The pristine, icy waters of Alaska yield some of the finest fish and shellfish in North America. Because its waters are protected by strict sustainable fisheries management systems, Alaska seafood is an environmentally sound choice for consumers.

Common saltwater fish harvested from Alaskan waters include pollock, halibut, sole, cod and black cod. Shellfish varieties are king crab, Alaska Dungeness crab, snow crab, Alaska scallops and Alaska spot prawns. Five varieties of salmon are commonly brought to market. They include King (or Chinook), Sockeye, Coho, Pink and Keta. All are rich in healthful omega-3 fats, a proven factor for reducing cholesterol and the risk of heart disease.
